The mountain principle

Great skiing doesn’t start with technique. It starts with state.

Watch an expert skier and you’ll notice one thing that no amount of instruction creates: they look effortless. Their body isn’t fighting the mountain — it’s dancing with it. Turns happen almost automatically. They read terrain before they reach it. They’re calm when the run gets steep.

That quality isn’t technique. It’s a neurological state — one where the brain is organized, the nervous system is relaxed, and movement flows from the body’s intelligence rather than conscious effort. And unlike technique, you can train it before you ever click into your bindings.

“The mountain doesn’t respond to effort. It responds to flow. And flow is a state your brain can be trained to access.” — Dr. Tom Lankering

Mastering Skiing: The Mountain Dance is seven BrainTap® sessions that build that state from the inside out — session by session, from Mountain Flow to Skiing, A Joyful Celebration.

How BrainTap works

Your brain follows. Your skiing flows.

BrainTap uses precisely calibrated audio beats and light pulses to guide your brain into specific performance states. When you listen before a run, you arrive on the mountain in a state your body already knows how to use.

Pre-run state priming

Most skiers arrive at the chairlift carrying the noise of their morning — logistics, family, work, temperature. BrainTap clears the slate and primes the calm focus that expert skiers access automatically.

Proprioceptive clarity

A calm nervous system processes balance and terrain feedback faster. You stop reacting to where your skis are and start anticipating the terrain ahead — the same quality that separates intermediate skiers from advanced ones.

Faster recovery between runs

Each session activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Consistent BrainTap use between and after ski days accelerates physical recovery — so you feel as strong on day three as you did on day one.

The program

Seven sessions. One mountain dance.

Each session is 20–30 minutes. Listen in the morning before you head to the mountain — it sets the neurological conditions before your boots go on. You can also use them the night before or after a run. The sessions build on one another — work through them in order, then return to the ones that serve you most.

Session 1
Mountain Flow
The foundation of the entire program. Guides you out of the mental noise of daily life and into the calm, present, focused state that great skiing requires. This is the session to use every morning before you ski — it sets the neurological conditions for everything that follows on the mountain.
Session 2
Effortless Carve
Trains the kinesthetic awareness that makes precise turning feel natural rather than mechanical. Builds the inner sense of edge angle, weight distribution, and timing that coaches try to teach with words — and that the nervous system learns much faster through guided imagery.
Session 3
Synchronized Flow
The session where movement stops being something you do and starts being something that happens through you. Develops the rhythm and synchrony that experienced skiers describe as being “in the zone” — where body, terrain, and gravity align without effort.
Session 4
Dynamic Interaction
Trains real-time terrain reading — the ability to anticipate and respond to what the mountain is doing rather than reacting after the fact. Builds the perceptual speed that lets you make micro-adjustments automatically, staying fluid on varied and challenging snow.
Session 5
Expressive Freedom
Opens up the playful, creative dimension of skiing that often closes down as skiers age or after an injury. Rebuilds the nervous system’s trust in its own capacity — the willingness to go after a line, try a steeper pitch, or just ski with genuine joy rather than careful management.
Session 6
Connection with Nature
The meditative session. Deepens the relationship between body and mountain environment — the cold air, the light, the silence, the terrain. For many skiers, this becomes their favorite session: a reminder of why they fell in love with skiing in the first place.
Session 7
Skiing, A Joyful Celebration
The integration session. Brings together Mountain Flow, Effortless Carve, Synchrony, Dynamic Response, Expressive Freedom, and Natural Connection into one complete, joyful state. Use before your best days on the mountain.

I live in the Roaring Fork Valley at the foot of some of the finest skiing in Colorado. Snowmass, Aspen, Buttermilk, Highlands — these mountains have been my classroom and my playground for decades. With 42 years of practice behind me, I think about skiing the way I think about everything else: not as a sport you manage around your age, but as something you can continue to do with more skill and more joy as long as you give your brain and body the right conditions.

Mastering Skiing came from a simple observation: the best skiers I know aren’t necessarily the most technically trained. They’re the ones whose nervous system is the most organized — the most calm, the most present, the most in-flow. I partnered with Dr. Patrick Porter to build a program that trains exactly that, using the same BrainTap technology I use in my own practice every day.

If you ski the Colorado mountains and you want to show up on the hill feeling ready rather than stiff, reactive rather than cautious, joyful rather than careful — this program was built for you.
